doom_topNo, no, this is not just another nostalgic article about crappy games from the late '80s and early '90s before the Microsoft came and bought our souls.

This is the article about the Maemo port of the DOOM, a game which set new standards for graphic quality and graphic violence in computer gaming when it hit PCs in 1993! Doom is a landmark title in the first-person shooter video game genre, and in first person gaming in general.

I loved this game and have played every Doom version since the early days and I can’t tell you how happy I am because I’m able to run in on my lovely Nokia N900 and its great high-definition screen!

PrBoom (originally short for "Proff Boom") for Maemo is a Doom source port developed from the original PrBoom project for Windows and Linux that closely emulates the original game and is currently based on the source code of its most recent stable version.

PrBoom is the culmination of years of work by various people and projects on the Doom source code. Unlike other source ports that concentrate on offering many new game features or changes, such as ZDoom, EDGE and the Eternity Engine, PrBoom aims to act as a stable port of the more established or traditional engines.

PrBoom uses the SDL library to abstract away operating system or platform specifics. As a result it supports a very large variety of platforms In addition to the PC, it has been compiled for the GP2X and various Mac models, among others. The source port, packaged with Freedoom, is included in the Fedora RPM software repository.

The IWAD is the main data file containing the graphics and levels for Doom. You need one to use PrBoom. If you have a copy of one of the original Doom games, copy your Doom, Doom 2, Ultimate Doom or Final Doom IWAD (doom.wad, doom2.wad, tnt.wad or plutonia.wad) to /opt/doom/wads.

Doom (occasionally typeset as DOOM) is a 1993 first-person shooter computer game by id Software that is a landmark title in the first-person shooter video game genre, and in first person gaming in general. It is widely recognized for pioneering immersive 3D graphics, networked multiplayer gaming on the PC platform, and support for custom expansions (WADs).

Distributed as shareware, Doom was downloaded by an estimated 10 million people within two years, popularizing the mode of gameplay and spawning a gaming subculture; as a sign of its effect on the industry, games from the mid-1990s boom of first-person shooters are often known simply as "Doom clones". Its graphic and interactive violence has also made Doom the subject of much controversy reaching outside the gaming world. According to GameSpy, Doom was voted by industry insiders to be the greatest game of all time in 2004.

Game is only available in Extras app catalogue (here you can find how to enable it if you already didn’t). That’s it, in case of any problem with installing appliaction on your N900 feel free to reach me over at our forum section ;)
